How to Choose a Computer Monitor

Compare monitor size, resolution, refresh rate, panel, connections and condition against your workspace and applications.

Reviewed and updated

Start with the workspace

Measure the usable desk space and consider viewing distance before choosing a diagonal screen size. A 24-inch or 27-inch label describes the diagonal, not the overall width, stand footprint or mounting requirements.

A larger display can make windows physically larger, but usable workspace also depends on resolution and scaling. For two screens, check desk width, computer display outputs and the exact monitor inputs before choosing matching units.

Resolution: FHD, QHD and 4K

Full HD commonly refers to 1920 × 1080 pixels, QHD to 2560 × 1440 and 4K UHD to 3840 × 2160. These are resolution labels, not physical screen sizes. Higher resolution can provide more detail, but text size and usable workspace also depend on operating-system scaling.

An ultrawide display can use a different pixel width or aspect ratio. Confirm the numerical resolution of the exact model rather than treating every QHD or 4K label as a complete specification. Our filters use listed display evidence; missing or conflicting specifications require confirmation.

Refresh rate and panel type

Refresh rate describes how often the display refreshes its image each second. A verified higher refresh rate can be useful for motion, but it does not alone establish response time, colour accuracy, adaptive-sync support or gaming performance.

IPS, VA, TN and OLED describe display technologies with different characteristics. The technology name alone does not establish brightness, calibration, viewing quality or suitability for creative work. Compare the exact documented specification and the needs of your applications.

Check the complete connection path

Confirm the computer output, monitor input and cable or adapter. A connector name does not establish every supported resolution or refresh rate. USB-C display, charging and hub capabilities vary by model and must be explicitly documented.

For an existing desktop or Micro PC, identify its actual outputs before ordering. Do not assume a monitor includes cables, speakers, a particular stand or mounting hardware unless the listing states that it does.

Condition and the final buying checklist

Review the selected configuration’s condition and any cosmetic or functional disclosure. Notes such as a line on the screen, a scratch or a non-working connection matter to the purchase and must not be hidden by a generic display specification.

Confirm the exact model, screen size, numerical resolution where required, refresh rate, panel, ports, included items and support terms. Use current stock and price for the selected configuration, then review delivery or collection arrangements.
