Battery health commonly compares present full-charge capacity with original design capacity. Runtime also changes with screen brightness, processor load, video calls, Wi-Fi, background software, battery size and power settings.

A percentage or operating-system estimate is a snapshot, not a guaranteed number of hours. The same battery can last much longer during document editing than during rendering or gaming.

Look for unexpected shutdowns, failure to charge, swelling, excessive heat and rapidly changing percentages. Available diagnostic information can help, but readings should be interpreted with the laptop’s age and behaviour.

Physical swelling is a safety concern. Stop using a swollen battery, disconnect power where safe and arrange professional replacement rather than pressing the chassis closed.

Ask whether battery operation is tested, whether a minimum policy applies and whether replacement is available for the model. Read warranty exclusions because batteries are often treated differently from core hardware.

If reliable unplugged work is essential, budget for a replacement or choose stock with clearly documented battery expectations. For desk-based use, ports, performance and price may matter more.

Avoid sustained excessive heat, use a compatible charger and keep firmware and power-management software current. Modern battery controls usually manage charging better than manual full-discharge routines.

Store an unused laptop in a cool, dry place with a moderate charge and check it periodically. Battery care can reduce stress, but normal chemical ageing cannot be eliminated.
